THE LIQUOR POLL
Sir, —“No Adulteration” says the prohibitionists are on the war-path again. Amusing! Never been off it. Not even a lull in the battle, or the drink problem would have been even worse. Thanks to Melville Mitchell for his information. We must Increase the number of sympathetic members of Parliament and get another statesman like the late Tommy Taylor. Mr Wilfrid Owen, when quoting the late President Abraham Lincoln, stopped short of that” great statesman’s pithy remark, “The use of alcohol has many defenders but no defence.” I have been a social worker for years and know alcohol to be our nation’s great eurse. Shortage of police or hosEital beds? No, not if we get prohiition. Liquor provides great revenue for the Government but a losing game. Paint the trade white by legalising it, but it still has the same odour. £24,000,000 was last year spent on liquor.—Yours, etc., „ L. J. BROWN. November 5, 1954.
