GIFT OF £3OOO USED TO BUY HOTEL (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 5. , A little more than 18 months ago, a ■ 28-year-old ship’s carpenter, Mr Peter Nee, dived off the English Prince in Lyttelton Harbour to save a drowning dog. Crushed against a fender, he. lost his legs. Today, because more than £3OOO was raised by public subscrip- . tions in New Zealand for him, Mr Nee is landlord of the White Swan Hotel, . at Stokesley, Yorkshire. Mr Nee sailed for England in Atigust , last year, and had his artificial legs . fitted there. Then he set about becoming a publi- , can. He started as a barman in Jar- . row-on-Tyne, his home town. Then, , a teetotaller and a non-smoker, he ; looked for a place of his own and chose the little hotel in Stokesley. He and his brother, a plumber, have i ambitious plans for renovating the mn. • Mr Nee expects to be busy. "I can do anything with my artificial 1 legs except dance,” he says.
