ROLL AT BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL
REDUCTION TO 750 FAVOURED
An optimum roll of 750 at the Christchurch Boys’ High School is favoured by the board of governors, and it will ask the Christchurch PostPrimary Schools’ Council when its building programme may allow reductions to this level. The present roll is 950. v At a meeting of the board „ yesterday, it was mentioned that a roll of 950 seemed probable for the next few years. “We should not commit odrselves to that number. It is too big,” said Mr G. Guy. Ever since it came into existence, the board had favoured an optimum roll of 750, and this figure had been endorsed by the central council. “This board must consider efficiency, and not just what suits the department in meeting accommodation difficulties,’’ said Mr W. C. Colee.
The Boys’ High School had permanent accommodation “without the prefabs” for 750, said Mrs L. J. Broomfield. A smaller school would allow more personal attention to the boys in general activities as well as in teach* mg, said Mr J. H. Pickles. “Isn’t it an urgent matter of policy for the Education Department to fix a postprimary school optimum so that it-will know the number of schools required?” he asked. •
The Minister of Education (MrR. M. Algie) had made 'such a statement about primary schools, and the same should be done for post-primary schools, said Mr Guy. The Post-primary Schools’ Council had so far planned three new the largest of which provided modation for 800, said the secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan). Perhaps the Education Department had reached some decision.
Mr C. W. Hamann said he thought the department would find helpful the opinions of responsible boards. - The headmaster (Mr J. Leggat) said it must be remembered that different kinds of post-primary schools would have different optimum rolls. In the country, the optimum might be smaller, and a multi-course school might also be smaller than a “straight academic” school. Though he thought the Boys’ High School was now too big, the size of sixth forms and the variety of courses which could be offered there were governed by the total enrolment.
