PARKING METER PEANS FOR CHRISTCHURCH
Streets in the central area of Christchurch will be the first to have parking meters. The City Council has agreed that the first meters, about 700 in all, will be installed in the area bounded by Lichfield street, Manchester street, Armagh street and Oxford terrace, as indicated by dots on the map. The council intends to install the
meters in January, but no advice has been received from the British suppliers for some time, and it is not known whether the shipment has been held up by the dock strike. The only area where there will be no meters will be outside the Chief Post Office. There, parking will be allowed free for five minutes. All the motorist has to do. is put 3d in the meter for 20 minutes’ park-
ing. The meters are operated by time clocks, which have to be wound once a week. After the meters have been in operation in the central city area for a while the council’s traffic department wijl be able to assess their influence on the flow of traffic. A decision can then be made on the location, and the parking time to be allowed, for meters in other parts of the city.
