RACING NEW ZEALAND CUP TOMORROW

Golden Tan Thrives On Beach Preparation

DORMANT SELECTED TO BEAT TOP WEIGHT

Golden Tan yesterday had his final trial for tommorrow’s Northßea "h CUP ’ Whe " h * ga,,oped a mile ® n the Bands of A car was used to measure out a mile on the beach, and the New Zealand Cup top-weight ran the distance with his stablemates, On Parade and Bonny Anne. Golden Tan was ridden by Mrs A. H. Christmas, wife of the horse s Awapuni trainer. On Parade, the stable’s second cup candidate, was ridden by R. Sellwood, and Bonny Anne, one of the early favourites for the Hagley Handicap, by J. Didham Golden Tan has been worked on the beach all this week i v soreness aftcr his run in the Canterbury Cup last week. _ T “We would not have any worries if we could run the New Zealand Cup on the beach,” said Mrs Christmas after she brought Golden Tan out of the surf yesterday.

Last season's Royal Wellington Cup winner gave a taste of his class when he ran Idaho to a nose in the CanterxUr'A Cup last week, but his jockey, J. Garth, said afterwards that the horse had not galloped with full freedom. He has to master »-6 in the New Zealand Cup on a track hardly likely to be any different to last week. On the day the Hastings-trained Dormant may beat him. Dormant firmed in favour for the Cup yesterday with a first-class final trial, one that also showed Ocean Spray II to advantage. And the Canterbury Cup winner, Idaho, strengthens the chance of a win for the North Island. The brilliant King’s Fair, winner of the Winter Cup at Riccarton in August, and a stablemate of Golden Tan, has also been feeling the hard tracks, and he, too, has had regular beach work this week. .Yesterday he sprinted five furlongs along the sands with Cambridge, the stable’s New Zealand Derby candidate.

King’s Fair is one of the early favourites for the Steward's Handicap. If he goes to the post at his best, he should make a bold bid to maintain his unbeaten record in open company, but he will be opposed by two brilliant gallopers in Clinker and Hush Money. Clinker l*ad an easy time on the tracks until yesterday, when he sprinted five furlongs nicely. Top weight of 9-5 should not stop him from taking part in the finish. Hushi Money is 91b below King's Tair <B-8) m the weights. Hush Money won the Wellington Racing Club’s Snorts Handicap over the same distance last month,, and her rhano. tomorrow must be respected. The W mgatui-trained Mighty Dollar may be the pick of the others. His form has not been solid, but his easy win at Gore last week was a pointer

ms auuuici auvLCbb. Derby Prospects Magic Carpet and the Takaninitrained Gulliver are expected to dominate the finish of the ninetysixth running of the New Zealand Derby. Magic Carpet was a class above the others in the Dunedin Guineas, and his effort in the Wellington Guineas was a performance obviously below standard. His fifth in the Canterbury Cup last Saturday can be regarded as a good Derby trial. He was the pacemaker for the. first half of the race, but he then surrendered his lead in a quick change of positions. With a better run from the home turn, he would have probably improved on his fifth. Magic Carpet is a type likely to derive considerable benefit from that race, and he should be at his best for test. Prince won the Grand National Steeplechase in August. Gulliver Pleases Everything Gulliver has done before and since his arrival at Riccarton has Stamped him. as a good galloper. His failure to beat Somerset Fair, a very fast horse, over a mile in the Great Northern Guineas, can hardly come under consideration. He galloped brilliantly at Trentham on his way south, and again at Riccarton on Tuesday. His sire. Fair’s Fair, has made his mark as a sire of very fast horses up to a mile, but given chances, he could be also represented by stayers. Moreover, Gulliver's dam is Classform, a New Zealand Cup winner. Privy Council, winner of the Hawkes Bay Guineas, fourth in the Harcourt Stakes at Trentham, and fourth again in the Canterbury Cup, will have a big following of place bettors. His chance brightened when he galloped with great dash yesterday Nuclear, a disappointment at Riccarton in August, left a better impression by winning, the Stonyhurst Efendicap last Saturday. A performance of the same calibre should be good enough to take him into the final struggle for the honours. Saba should be a good second string to Magic Carpet as a Riccarton prospect. He has shaped like a stayer in nis latest races. Three Step ran Privy Council to a nose, and did so at the, height of a strong run. in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, before finishing third in the Wellington Guineas. With Glenlee, the Desert Gold Stakes winner at Trentham. he strengthens the hand of the North Island horses, but Magic Carpet will probably beat the best of them. Fast Southern Youngsters North Island youngsters have won the Welcome Stakes for the last three years, but Great Seal and Omar .will not find it easy to lengthen that sequence tomorrow. Southland-owned colts in Skylight and Seven Seas, and Can’t Fault, the only filly in the field and another Southland youngster, should be well to the fore in the finish if they race up

to their best form. Seven Seas narrowly beat Skylight in the Dunedin Jockey Club’s McLean Stakes, the first two-year-old race of the season in the South Island, but shin soreness and a cold have kept him away from racing since. Mr W. T. Oliver’s powerful Faux Tirage colt did not look any the worse for his setback when he sprinted yesterday, so there is quite a strong possibility that he will repeat the performance of his brilliant half-sister. Excellency, eight years ago. Skylight a winner on the second day at wingatui, was fourth, weakening slightly, in the Irwell Handicap last week, but he is a fitter colt now. In addition he has one of the inside barrier’berths this time, and a reasonably good start should let him keep in the picture all the way. Great Seal and Motueka were both running on for the minor places behind Can’t Fault In the Irwell Handi-

cap, and ran the Southland filly close. But r improvement can be expected from Can’t Fault, which showed greenness in her successful debut Selections:— Suburban High-weight: Brace, Bon Soir-Belle Nuit bracket, Super Mara.
