Ashburton Show Notable For High-Quality Merinos

breeders in Mid-Canterbury, • e jF showing at the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Associashow yesterday, have produced ££2?%***? b s st shee P of this breed in For these sheep the Ashburton show would be the third jjost important in the country—after Marlborough and Christchurch. This £.J?e of Mr H - Beattie, of Fairlie, judge of the Merino section at the show. made an outstanding display,’’ , y es J e rday f ‘"They were very well presented, and I had considerable difficulty in reaching a decision.” The championship for rams was won by a massive sheep shown by A. A. Urquhart* of Mount Somers. It was well covered with very good, long wool. Mr Urquhart also exhibited the champion ewe, another very fine animal. Nowhere in the section did Mr Beatcause for complaint, except that the sheep were so good it made judging a most difficult and meticulous task. Classes were large and there was plenty of competition. Also free with his praise was the judge of the Milking Shorthorns (Mr M. A Peach, of Sefton). All animals shown were of a very high standard, he said. “It was a pity that some of the classes were not larger.” Mr Douglas Johnston, of Ashburton, was undoubtedly the most successful of the Corriedale breeders exhibiting at the show. He took 22 prizes in the section—seven of these were firsts, eight seconds, four thirds, and three very highly commendeds. With them were two championship ribbons and one reserve championship. Mr Johnston’s ram which took the reserve championship won first prize at the Royal show at Invercargill in January, and another he exhibited yesterday which won a third prize won a first at the Christchurch show in the single shorn ram hogget class. His champion ewe took first prize as a hogget at Christchurch in 1952. Finally, the pair of ram hoggets which won him first prize in that class yesterday have been sold to the Argentine for £1750. Ponies shown at Ashburton were of a better standard in their way than the horses, according to the judge, Mr R. D. Westenra, of Pleasant Point. Both ponies and riders displayed a high standard and showed how much the pony club organisation of New Zealand was assisting the sport. “There was one point I rather wondered at," he said. “I think in the pony clubs they teach riders to put the foot hard home in the stirrup. Most of the competitors today only put their toes in;’’
