London-Kenya Flight By Two Women
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 1. Two women friends, one a South African, and the other English, set out from the Shoreditch Airfield today on a 10,700-mile flight to Nairobi, Kenya, in a single-engined aeroplane. Miss Betty Rowell, woman gliding champion of South Africa, aged 30, and Miss Dorothy Alton, a 47-year-old Nottingham missionary, pooled their savings to buy the Auster Aiglet aeroplane for the journey, which they hope to complete in 50 hops before Christmas. After making temporary repairs at Tonga the men set sail for Suva, via Lau Island. At the island temporary sails were rigged and a makeshift rudder and masf built. Two days after the yacht left, an earthquake struck the island, almost totally destroying it. Near Mosquito Island, a 30ft tidal wave pounded the Bounty and again stripped it of all its deck gear. It took three weeks for a refit.
