ADDINGTON MARKET

HEAVY ENTRY IN MOST SECTIONS Store Sheep Demanc Restricted PRICES GENERALLY LOWER A good selection of store lambs was offered at the Addington Market yes-, terday, but there was no great life in the market. Prices just about held the rates of last week. It was a double sale for fat stock, as there will be no market next week, and entries in the principal sections were heavy. The cattle yarding was the biggest for many months. Prices generally were lower, because the numbers forward were too big for the demand.

STORE; SHEEP The store sheep offering totalled 3992, against 5530 last week, and was made up of 624 ewe hoggets. 2100 wether hoggets. 747 ewes and lambs, and 521 wethers. Selling was a little difficult in some sections, but there wss no great change in prices from last week. A fairly big gallery followed the sale, but there were not many buyers among them.. The ewe hogget offering was of mixed quality, and contained few really good lots, though some useful sheep were forward, Prices were about the same as those last week. The best of the offering made to 86s, which was paid for a line of well-grown Romney cross. Good lots made 67s to 735. medium 58s to 635, and others down to 465.

The only quotable lines were one of 90 Romney cross in the wool from R. Tregonning (Seddon), and a pen of 58 small halfbreds from A. Roberta (Balcairn), at

The wether hogget entry was generally of good quality and in first-class order. The sale opened quietly, with prices below those of last week, but it soon improved to last week’s rates, which held for the rest of the sale. There was no great life in the market, but the good sheep sold steadily enough. Top price was 55s 6d for a very attractive lot of 48 Romney cross from Adams Bros. (Sheffield), which made the top price. The best of the yarding made 51s to 55s 6d, good lots 44s to 50s, medium 39s to 435. and smaller and backward down to 345. The ewes and lambs were in general an ordinary lot. Prices were about on a par with those of last week, but there was rather less strength in the bidding. A small lot of 18 woolly halfbred ewes, with 19 good Down cross lambs, made the top price of 525. Good shorn lots made 35s t° 37s 6d» all counted, and others 28s 6d to 32s 6d. A good lot of 77 shorn four and sixtooth Corriedale ewes from G. F. Hutton (Bangor) made 475. Almost the whole of the wether yarding was made up of two drafts. One, of 279 three-shear halfbreds, from the estate of N. Rutherford (Mendip Hills) made 40s. They were good sheep, in good order, and seemed very reasonable at the price. Mrs A. W. Langdale (West Melton) sold two pens 9 f good two-tooth halfbreds, one of 74 making the top price of 51s 6d. and the other, of 72. making 48s 6d. SPRING LAMBS There was another excellent sale for spring lambs. The yarding was 191, compared with 78 last week, and was again of good quality. After last week’s excellent auction, when prices appreciated by 3s to ss, there was still a marked firming tendency, and values were on an average 3s to 4s better than a week ago. Competition from freezing buyers helped to stimulate the market. The beat of the offering made from 80s 7d to 91s id. good TBs Id to 80s Id, and others down to 69s Id. • FAT HOGGBTS For fat hoggets values did not change to any marked extent. The yarding at 1490 was very much larger than last week, and it included an assortment of quality with a fair proportion of good sheep. The best of the yarding commanded good competition with prices fully firm to a shade better than last week, but plain and light sorts were still hard to sell. The best shorn hoggets made from 68s Id to 74s 7d, good 62s Id to 67s 7d. medium 54s Id to 618 7d, and others down to 49s Id. The few woolly hoggets sold up to 90s Id. The top price for shorn wethers went to C. V. Harris (Rangiora), who sold 10 out of a line of 87 at 74s 7d. The whole line averaged about 65s 7d. FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry was 746 against 478 last week, and though it'-was largely of good quality, it was much too big for requirements. DAIRY CATTLE There was an entry of 40 head in the dairy cattle section, and in the main the offering was of only average quality. A good Friesian cow sold at £33 10s, and a Friesian heifer at £3l, but apart from these sales,- the market was very dull with values below late rates, and numerous passings.

FAT PIGS Entries were again large in the porker section, but quality was not up to the usual standard. The sale dragged, and values for all classes were again easier by 3s to 5s a head. In the bacon section there was also a heavy entry, and in a slow sale values declined by 10s to Iss on last week's reduced rates. Choppers were forward in large numbers, and although the sale was a good one, values were barely up to the rates of last week. values were:—' Light porkers, £5 19s fid to £6 19s fid. The entry of store pigs was much smaller than that of last week, and consisted mainly of weaners and slips. The attendance of buyers was a little larger and com Detition was much brighter than last week. The easing in good quality weaners was fully recovered, but large stores were easier by 3s to 4s a head. Values were:—Small weaners, 60s to 70s. Best wbaners, 72s to 80s. Slips, 85s to 955.
