POSSIBLE MEAT MARKET
N.Z. EXPORT PROSPECTS IN PHILIPPINES
The prospects of meat exports to the Philippines and of coke exports to Victoria are discussed in a report from the New Zealand Trade Commissioner In Melbourne, which i» quoted in the October issue of “New Zealand Commerce,” the official organ of . the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand. “At the present time the Philippines is anxious to import either Australian oy New Zealand mutton and beef,” says the report. “Full details on the cuts required by the Philippines importers have been sent to the head office of the Department of Industries and Commerce with the request that they be passed on to the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, and any exporters who may be Interested in this market. “In all probability, the shipments would be small, as refrigerated space on the ships trading between New Zealand and the Philippines is strictly limited. “From inquiries made by a Melbourne company, it appears that , a ready market could be found for any surplus metallurgical and soft coke held in New Zealand,” the report says. “The company believes that it could find orders for up to 10,000 tons. The present cost into foundry for New South Wales' coke is stated to be £l7 4s a ton, and it is believed that the New Zealand coke could be landed at this figure, or perhaps even less. “The head office of the Department of Industries and Commerce has been advised of .this and requested to supply details of the quantity and quality of coke available and also information on prices,”
