USEFUL EFFORT BY KAURU BOY

SECOND LEG OF DOUBLE AT KAIKOURA Kauru Boy followed up some useful placings at the recent Nelson meeting by winning the second leg of the double, the Keenan Handicap, at the Kaikoura Trotting Club's meeting yesterday. Te Waihopi made the pace for the first mile, after which Loyal Eagle took over. Te Waihopi pulled her way to the front with just under half a mile to run, and Kauru Boy, which had never been far away, took over with under two furlongs to, go. Kauru Boy led into the straight from Te Waihopi. Overdale Lad, Jocoly, and Centennial Star. Kauru Boy was clear at the furlong, and ran on well to beat the fastfinishing Jocoly by a- neck. Jocoly did well to finish so close up after breaking in the running. The Scotland's Pride mare should soon be a winner for W. K. Tatterson, who trains her at Addington for Mr J. Miller. Half a length behind Jocoly, Overdale Lad finished on to cut Te Waihopi out of third money by a neck. Te waihopi had every chance. She was well clear of Double Brook, Lancewood, and Centennial Star, which had * been badly checked at the end of just under five furlongs. Hula Ro>se In Form Hula Rose credited her sire, Red Emperor, with his first winner when she outstayed the opposition in the Stewards' Handicap. She broke soon after the start, but did not lose much ground. Stylish Linda began best, but with five furlongs to run she was passed by Queen’s Coronet. The last-named was well beaten with three furlongs to run, and Hula Rose raced round the field to take control racing to the straight. At this stage she was followed by Village Hall, Johnny Ray. Super Potts, and Stylish Linda, Hula Rose ran on well, but did not have much in reserve to win bj' half a length.

Johnny Ray, which did not receive a good run, finished on well in the straight for second, half a length in front of Super Potts, which had never been far a\yay. A length back Village Hall was fourth, ahead of Stylish Linda, with a gap to Punchenello rnd Queen's Coronet. Contentious, Punchenello, Alberta, and Humble Pie lost ground at the start. Humble Pie fell racing to the two-furlong DOSt. Centennial Star Wins Centennial Star, which is owned and trained at Kaikoura by B. J. Mackie, led from end to end to win the South Bay Handicap at odds of almost 19 to 1. Most of the field, including the second favourite, Te Waihopi, broke at the start. Centennial Star set- a sound pace and in the. back straight he strode away from the others to have a lead of two lengths over Loyal Eagle, Double Brook, Lance wood, Royal Mile, and Overdale Lad at the straight entrance. Centennial Star was always trotting easily and he won convincingly by more than a lengths Lancewood which had moved up smartly in the early stages of the race, finished on for second, a head in front of Double Brook. The last named broke about the furlong, but he got back to his gait, and was doirig well at the post, clear of Loyal Eagle, Kauru Boy, and Jocoly. - Royal Mile, the odds on favourite, did not trot kindly and he broke about the furlong post, finishing well back.

Dinnie Daley Holds On Dinnie Daly, a brother to the Dunedin Cup winner. Victory Dale, led over the last seven and a half furlongs of the An-’ niverfery Handicap and he ran on solidly to win. Dinnie Daley, which was having his first start from N. L. Berkett's stables, looks as though he may win his way to a good mark. Super Potts led for the first four and a half furlongs, where Dinnie Daley, which had been a little slow’ early, took control. Dinni-j Daley' was clear at the straight entrance, where Local Power, Super Potts, Stylish Linda, and Chief Lady were all handy. In a good race home, Dinnie Daley, which did not have to do his best, won well by half a leqgth. Local Power did well to take second place, after being slow away and suffer-

ing a check In the first furlong. He may not be long in maiden class. Chief Lady finished on from well back in the field to take third plrce, a neck behind Local Power, with Stylish Linda stopping slightly to fourth, clear of Super Potts, Johnny Kay. Keresan, and Punchenello. Alberta was pulled up at the end of two furlongs with a broken hopple. T.A.3.
