FATAL HOTEL FIRE
MAN KILLED; SIX OTHERS SAFE DANNEVIRKE BUILDING DESTROYED (New Zealand Press Association) DANNEVIRKE, October 3. A man was killed when the Mangatera Hotel in Dannevirke was destroyed by fire early this morning. Six other persons escaped. The licensee of the hotel is Mr Percy Wilmeshurst. The man killed is believed to have been Peter Neilsen, of Dannevirke. Mr Neilsen was a boarder at the hotel, and occupied a room on the second floor of the wooden building. The body has been recovered. The Dannevirke Fire Brigade’s -two engines were called out to the fire, which started about 6.3 n a.m., but- when they arrived, the flames already had a firm hold. The brigade was able to prevent nearby buildings from catching fire. It was the second outbreak in the hotel in a week. A fire in the office last Thursday was brought under control before much damage was done.
