ANNUAL COMPETITIONS FOR N.Z. VOLUNTARY AIDS

AUCKLAND, October 3. Delegates from all over New Zeala/id attended the opening of a conference of Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment officers at Auckland. The Mayor of Auckland (Mr J. H. Luxford) told the conference that lack of doing constructive work was responsible for much juvenile delinquency. He hoped many young girls would join the Red Cross and make themselves useful. Brigadier K. MacCormick, president of the Auckland centre of the Red Cross Society, said that giving help to the aged would be one of the main peace-time efforts of the Red Cross. The conference was opened by the Mayoress (Mrs Luxford). Other speakers were Mrs M. Hodgkinson, of Wellington, Director-General of Voluntary Aids, and Mrs M. Simich, centre commandant of the Auckland branch. Today, Miss M. Jackson, advisory

director at the Auckland centre, paid a _Jribute to the high standard of efficiency of teams taking part in the* Voluntary Aids’ national competitions, and commented that the results reveaied most creditable efforts by those who had trained the teams. Results were:— Kohn Shield (marching).—Wellington, 298 marks, 1; Otago, 286, 2. First Aid Competition for the Orana KotigCup.— Otago. 657, 1; Wellington, Collins Cup (home nursing).—Wellington, 510, 1; Auckland 473, 2. , For the first time a competition was held for cadet nurses. The results were:—Auckland 1, Wanganui 2.

IDENTITY CARDS FOR VOLUNTARY AIDS (New Zealand Pres Association) AUCKLAND, October 3. Identity cards will be issued to all qualified first aid members of the Red Cross Society if a recommendation sent to the Dominion executive by the Voluntary Aid Detachment officers’ conference on Saturday is approved. A list of names of all the bearers of these cards will then be sent to every police station in New Zealand. Mrs M. Hodgkinson, DirectorGeneral of Voluntary Aids, said tonight that, if a disaster struck these lists would help in having voluntary aids quickly dispatched to the scene.
