“REAL PROTECTION” SOUGHT FROM CRASH HELMETS
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 1. “If motor-cyclists are to wear crash helmets by compulsion after July 1 next year, then the obvious step to be taken is to ensure that the helmets to be sold will be the real thing giving protection, not the appearance of protection,” said Mr T. R. McCleary, who represents the motor-cyclists’ organisation on the Road Safety Council, in a statement today. Mr McCleary said that already orders had been cabled away for large numbers of helmets—including one order for 20,000—and unless the position was cleared up right away there was a danger that thousands of unsatisfactory helmets would be on the market and by their very weight of numbers gain official approval.
