CLIMBS OPEN SEASON
PROFESSIONAL COACH FOR AVONSIDE
A professional coach for junior players on Saturday mornings had been engaged by the Avonside Tennis Club, said the president (Mr J. Nunes), at the opening of the club's season on Saturday. Mr D. Martin, representing the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, said that the season looked promising, especially with the visit of the Swedish champions, Bergelin and Davidsson. Mrs J. Nunes presented the following F Championship Events.—Men’s singles: J.' Reader: women’s singles: Miss P. Allen; men’s doubles, J. Reader and T. Tyler; women’s doubles, Misses P. Pope and D. Norrie; mixed doubles, A. Leopold and Miss P. Allen. Handicap events.—Men’s singles, J. S. Lowcay; women’s singles, Miss L. Mardon; men’s doubles, B. MacGeorge and J. S. Lowcay; women’s doubles, Miss S. Webley and Mrs B. Granger. T. W. McK. Wilkins Cups.— Junior girls’ singles, Miss D. Norrie; junior boys’ singles, L. Porter. Most improved player: Grbriel Bouterey. CASHMERE CLUB There was a very large attendance at the opening of the Cashmere Club. The gresident (Mr K. Andrews) welcomed Mr t. R. Lake. MP., Mr R. A. Young, representing the Heathcote County Council, and Mr D. Young, of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Mr A. N. Bailey presented the club with silver buttons for a girls’ under 18 competition. WAIMAIRI CLUB The president of the Waimairl Club (Mr S. Balfour) announced that Mrs I. Beddis had been elected a life member, in recognition of her many years of service on the committee. .He presented trophies won during the year as follows: Championship Events.—Men’s singles, J. Beddis: women’s singles. Miss M. Dodds; men’s doubles, J. Beddis and P. Greenwood; women’s doubles, Mesdames P. A. Marks and B. A. Marks: boys’ singles, C. D. Liddell; mixed doubles, R. Dalzell and Miss M. Nisbet. Handicap events — Women’s singles, Mrs Marks; men’s doubles, E. Biddle and T. Kearns; women’s doubles, Misses M. Dodds and A. Forsyth; boys’ singles, C. D. Liddell; girls singles, Miss J. Andrews; boys’ doubles, C. D. Liddell and B. May; girls’ doubles, Misses Tindall and J. Andrews; returned servicemen’s singles, T. Kearns. ST. ALBANS CLUB Mrs J. K. Haberfield presented the following prizes at the opening of the St. Albans Club:—

Bowen and Miss Marriott; boy’s singles (McKay Cup), P. Bowen; junior handicap doubles. P Bowen ana Miss J. NORTH LINWOOD CLUB Officers of the North Unwood Tennis Club were elected as follows at. the annual meeting:— Life member, Mr F. F Adams; patron, Mr H. C. Smart; president, Mr F F. Adams; vice-presidents, 12 were elected; club captain, Mr M. J. Beatty, vice-cap-tain, Mr E. Cormack; women's captain, Miss D. Hughes; secretary-treasurer, Mr L. E, Fox; committee, Messrs M. Robinson, N. Orr, J, Adlam, and T. Harneiss, Mrs Robinson, Misses M. Hughes and S. Quinn. Opening day was set for October 9.
