EXPEDITION TO ANTARCTIC

ANNOUNCEMENT BY PRESIDENT (K.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) DENVER, October 2. President Eisenhower’s holiday headquarters announced today the United States would send a small navy-directed expedition to the Antarctic, an area ot great potential strategic importance in the event ot war. The brief announcement at the Denver headquarters said the decision to dispatch an icebreaker to the southern polar area "is in line with continuing United States interest in the region." The expedition will set out soon and remain four or five months, it* was announced. It added that in addition to mapmaking and collecting scientific data, the exploring party will study supply problems which will face a United States group taking part in an international geophysics programme in the Antarctic in 1957-58. No permanent shore bases will be established.

The United States so far has refrained from staking any claim to territory in the South Pole area, but the importance of the region in the event of a war with the Soviet Union has been under lengthy study by military experts.
