GRASS FIRE SWEEPS BIG AREA

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 2. A fire that threatened parts of Waiouru Military Camp was fought yesterday afternoon and well into the night by 100 men. Early this morning most of the fire had been extinguished by light rain, hut not before it had swept across hundreds of acres of tussock country in Ifome Valley, towards the Owhanga river, and bush country to the west. At first it was thought the fire could be extinguished without difficulty, but because of the dry growth the task was too much for the fire beaters. When night came the fire sent up 100-foot high flames as it swept along the hills and valley.
