ELECTIONS IN BRAZIL

Troops Called To Maintain Order

(Rec. 10 p.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO (Brazil), Oct. 2. Troops stood on the alert throughout Brazil today as the nation’s 15,000.000 voters prepared to cast ballots tomorrow in local, State, and Congressional elections. The pre-election campaign was so intense troops have been asked to maintain order in 158 municipalities. Parachute troops were ready to fly to any trouble spots. The voters will choose 326 Deputies, 41 Senators, 11 State Governors, and many municipal officers. The election is expected to test the strength of President Joao Cafe Filho’s government and lay the basis for the Presidential campaign of 1955. The chief fight is between the Leftwing followers of the late President Getulio Vargas, who committed suicide on August 24 after being forced to resign by the military, and Rightwing groups supporting Mr Cafe.
