‘France Must Consider Powers’ Unanimity’

(Rec. 8 p.m.). LONDON. October 2. The French Prime Minister (Mr Mendes-France) broadcasting tonight over Paris Radio from London where he is attending the nine-Power conference said the other eight Powers had taken a stand for German rearmament and their unanimity on this point was a thing which France must take into consideration. Systematic opposition by France alone would be an attitude deprived of realism. “It would finally have deprived us of all control of this remilitarisation of Germany which would in any case have been continued without us,” Mr Mendes-France said. But the risks of German rearmament had to be guarded against. “That is why in French proposals submitted in London accent was placed by France on limitation and control of armaments,” Mr MendesFrance said.

He said this was aimed not only at Germany, but at general control.
