Commodore Sir Charles Madden, Chief of the Naval Staff, will go on a three weeks’ training cruise aboard the frigate H.M.N.Z.S. Hawea. The Hawea will sail from Wellington on Monday. It will call at Nelson, Westport and Greymouth; as well as the Marlborough Sounds and Fiordland.— (P.A.)
The Rev. Alban Purchas has been appointed vicar of the Anglican parish at Fairlie. It is expected that he will take up his duties before Christmas.
Mr A. T. Dailey retired this week from the position of chief clerk to the North Canterbury Hospital Board after 40 years’ and eight months’ service with the board. A presentation from all sections of the board’s staff was made by the secretary (Mr A. Prentice). The chairman of the board (Mr V. C. Lawn), the medical superintendent (Dr. T. Morton) and heads of departments paid tribute to Mr Dailey and his work.
Mr W. L. Newnham, of Wellington, chairman of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council, attended a meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday. Next week he will inspect some of the board’s works. Mr F. Mitchell, Town Clerk of Nelson, and city treasurer for the last 22 years, retired yesterday. He will be succeeded by Mr W. E. McCullough, Assistant Town Clerk since 1947. Mr B. N. Challis, of Invercargill, has been appointed Assistant Town Clerk.
