RUSSIA BUYS SOUTH AFRICAN WOOL
(N.Z. Press Association—Conurionti CAPE TOWN, September 30. Russia has entered the South African wool market states the Johannesburg “Rand Daily Mail.”
’There is no direct buying, as there are no Russian woolbuyers in South Africa, but wool broking firms are operating for the Soviet Union,” says the newspaper.
The first indication that Russia was in the market came last week in Caue Town. This week Russian buying at the Port Elizabeth sale took third place to Europe and Bradford. “Russian buying could be significant. Prices at this season’s opening sales, which -have been slow, lasted a month, and were from 10 to 15 per cent, below theprices ruling at the close of last season. Since then prices have firmed. ar ? tending to harden further. Russia is a brand new customer, and her presence at the sales means more competition. There has been no Russian buying from South Africa for decades.”
