YOUTH RESCUED FROM HARBOUR

ATTEMPT TO BOARD MOVING FERRY

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 1. The ferry Makora crossed the Auckland harbour in 12 minutes today in a dash to save the life of a sailor who had fallen into the water at the Devonport ferry wharf. A normal crossing takes about 15 minutes. The sailor, Steward Harry Albert Griffin, aged 20, of H.M.N.Z.S. Pukaki, was hurried to the Auckland Hospital suffering from concussion and the effects of immersion. His condition tonight was serious. The Makora was already under way as Steward Griffin sprinted down the wharf and attempted to leap on board at the stern. He missed his footing, struck his head on the ferry’s side, and fell into the water. He immediately sank. The ferry backed towards the wharf, where Steward Griffin could be seen under the water near the wharf piles. Somebody on the lower deck caught him by the jacket with a boathook and hauled him on board unconscious. He was in the water for five minutes.
