WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Kellaway presided over £® I L2£t mbers four visi tors at the September meeting of the Coalgate Country Women’s Institute. Members were asked to support the CORSO appeal. r L, Gre^ n reported sending a parcel of clothing to the institute’s sponsored child in Austria. The wandering shilling was won by Mrs Johns—a visitor. Southbridge.—There was a very fair attendance at the September meeting of the Southbridge Country Women’s Institute, where Mrs Healey, (president), expressed sympathy with Mesdames J. BaUagh, L. Bailey, G. M. Doyle, E. Somerville, T. T. McMillan and G. Brown. Stewards were appointed for the group flower show, and sixteen members signified their willingness to attend the halfyearly council meeting. Three members of Hillsborough-Heathcote Women’s Institute gave an Interesting and varied display of their work done at their arts and crafts meeting. They were Mesdames Anderson, Barron and Aldridge. Mrs Cant gave her report on the recent conference. The hostesses were Mesdames H. Parkin, Davisqn. The wandering shilling was won by Mrs A. Stewart, the prize being donated by Mrs W. Ludemann. Soft toy: Mrs Ludemann. Posy Bowl: Mrs Carr 1, Mrs Cant 2, Mrs Lewton 3. Lakeside.—Mrs R. Hampton presided at the September meeting of the Lakeside Country Women’s Institute. Sympathy with the Lavin and Hawson families in their bereavements was expressed. Mrs F. Chambers was chosen delegate for the half yearly meeting to be held at Akaroa. Nine members will attend. Arrangements were made for the Women’s Institute group flower show on September 24 when Lakeside members will be hostesses. Final arrangements were made for the Institute birthday on October 14. Birhday Sprays were presented to five members. A feature of the social side of the meeting was the cutting of a birthday cake by one of the members whose birthday coincided with the meeting. She was presented with a gift in recognition of her work for the Institute. Mrs Prebble was nominated for Dominion Councillor. An appeal for giothing for CORSO was made. McLaughlin, H. Patterson and Miss A. Patterson. Killinchy.—Mrs H. Riches presided over a good attendance of members at the September meeting of the Killinchy Country Women's Institute. A motion of sympathy was passed •with Mesdames S. Chappel, S. Pycroft, K. Boon anol R. McClure. An invitation to the Doyleston birthday party was accepted. Mrs A. Allen was chosen delegate to attend the half yearly federation meeting to be held at Akaroa in October. Mrs C. Manson who was delegate at the recent confer.ence in Wellington, gave a comprehensive report. Mrs A. Allen won the wandering shilling and Mrs Riches demonstrated the art of making moss pad. It was decided to hold the October meeting in the first Tuesday in the month. Hostesses for the Afternoon were Mesdames E. K. Millar, L. Allan and J. K. . Okains Bay.—The Okains Bay Women’s Institute held its September meeting in the local hall., Mrs J. Mason presiding. Correspondence included a letter from the Canterbury federation with remits for the half yearly meeting to be held in Akaroa. A letter was received from Akaroa Women’s Institute asking Okains Bay to assist in catering for afternoon tea at the half yearly meeting. Miss M. G. Havelaar sent a letter of appreciation for the fee for the institute’s sponsored child. An appeal for clothes for CORSO was received. It was proposed to send 10s to the Crippled Children Association. Mrs J. Mason read the Dominion President’s letter. A posy was presented to Mrs F. Mason who is leaving the district. The secretary was asked to write to Mrs J. Boleyn, a former member, to congratulate her and her husband at the celebration of their golden wedding. Mrs Geo. Harris gave an interesting talk about her visit to Longbeach. Competition results were as follows:—two pound jar of spring bulbs: Mrs J. Harris 1, Miss Mary Moore 2, Mrs J. E. Thacker 3. Specimen polyanthus: Mrs J. Boleyn 1, Mrs R. Hartley 2, Mrs P. Moore 3. Something made in the winter: Miss N. Moore 1, Miss Corral Harris 2, Mrs P. Moore and Mrs E. Moore (equal) 3. Hostesses were Miss Corral Harris, Mrs Geo. Harris, and Mrs J. L. Curry. Wadpara.—Miss Edlene Topp was the guest speaker at the August meeting of the Waipara Country Women’s Institute, her subject being Mexico. Mrs Thomson presided. The green group were hostesses. Members were asked to help the CORSO appeal with gifts of clothing and footwear. Competitions resulted as follows: jam jar of flowers: Mrs Hawke 1, Mrs Smith 2. Ohoka.—Four new members were welcomed at the monthly meeting of the Ohoka Country Women’s Institute. “Mother and baby” afternoon was observed. During the month the institute celebrated the tenth anniversary of its formation. A tree was planted in the school grounds to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Omihi.—Mrs Harrison presided at the August meeting of the Omihi Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Harrison gave a report on the Dominion conference held in Wellington.
