APPOINTMENTS OF ENGINEERS
COLLEGE INDUSTRIAL DEPARTMENT
MESSRS T. H. SCOTT AND F. W. SELDON
Two senior positions in the Industrial Development Department of Canterbury University College were filled by appointments confirmed yesterday by the council of the college. Mr T. H. Scott, senior electrical engineer, in the Dominion Physical La* Moratory..at .Lower Hutt, has been appointed senior engineer to replace Mr N. B. Manssen, who has resigned. Mr F. W- Seldon has been appointed to the vacant position of engineer in charge of design, Mr Scott was educated at the Christchurch Boyg’ High School and Canterbury University College, where he graduated B.E. (Elec:-Mech.) in 1938. In 1939 he was awarded a British Thomson Houston Exhibition, and went to the British Thomson Houston Company at Rugby, where he carried out a two years’ student apprentice course, and also spent six months on transformer design work. In 1941 he entered the research laboratory on radar modulator development work. He became a member of this staff, and later his work included development and design of plant for the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell.
In England Mr Scott gained wide experience of high-power electronic control, transformers, modulators, spark gaps and other aspects of electronic and electrical research.
In 1960 he returned to New Zealand, and in 1951 he joined the staff of the Dominion Physical Laboratory at Lower Hutt, where he has held the position of senior, electrical engineer for the last four years. Mr Seldon was educated at Christ’s College and Canterbury University College, where he graduated B.E. (Eiec.-Mech.) in 1942. In December of that year he joined the defence deW h^ n at o <?an^bu^ versity College, and was engaged in radar research for the armed forces. Mr Seldon worked with the defence section until it was disbanded in 1948. Mr Seldon was appointed to the Industrial Development Department as engineer m charge of design, which position he held until 1952, when he resigned and left for England to take up a' position with the Ministry of Supply.
For the last two and a half years Mr Seldon has been working at the research establishment of the Ministry of Supply at Great Malvern in Worcestershire. He has been specialising in servo mechanisms and control problems. Mr Seldon expects to return to Christchurch early in 1955.
