ALLEGED ASSAULT ON WARDER

PRISONER ASKS FOR LEGAL AID

When Joseph Eric Cornish, aged 42. a prisoner in Paparua Prison, appeared in the Magistrate’s' Court yesterday on a charge of assaulting a prison officer, Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M., remanded him for a week so that an application by Cornish for legal assistance could be considered. Cornish was charged that on September 15, being a prisoner in Paparua Prison, he committed the aggravated prison offence of personal violence to an officer of the prison in that he assaulted Prison Officer A. E. Blake by hitting him in the face with a broken water glass. “Cornish, I have read your application for legal assistance,” said the Magistrate. “There is no provision for that in this Court but it may be that a member of the legal profession will be willing to appear on your behalf. I will remand you for a week so that your application can be considered.”
