American Aid To Spain

(Rec. 8 p.m.) MADRID, September 26. Madrid’s three morning newspapers today commented on the first anniversary of the signing of the SpanishAmerican defence and aid agreements. The Catholic newspaper, “Ya,” said: “The experience of the last 12 months shows that, thanks to the purchase of foodstuffs and help given to our industries and agriculture, we have received the means of production equivalent to one-fifth of our balance of payments. With such help the foundations of our policy of economic expansion have received a solid impulse.”

, newspaper “A.8.C.” said: People are always talking of American help. In the case of Spain, we think if fairer to call it ‘collaboration. In the years after the war the word ‘help’ sounds like ‘protection.’ This is not applicable in the case of Spain.

“We give a lot to the United States and the United States gives us what she can. Generosity is therefore mutual and bilateral.”

The Falangist newspaper, “Arriba,” devoted its central pages to a feature article with pictures describing how the 85,000,000 American dollars appropriated to Spain last year were being used.

Underwater Swim Across Golden Gate.— Jack Lalanne, a physical culturist, celebrated his birthday today by swimming the Golden Gate under water. Lalanne, who wore a 1201 b frogman outfit, including oxygen tanks, weights, long underwear, and a rubber suit, took 50min for the mile and a half swim.—San Francisco, September
