Attlee’s View On U.S. And Chinese Relations

Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, September 27. “The Chinese are afraid of being attacked by America, and the Americans are afraid of attack by the Chinese,” said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Attlee) in a speech today. “There you have a picture of a world full of dangerous weapons, with great nations whose minds are turned to fear,” he said. “Surely it is worthwhile to try to make the effort to break down that fear.” Mr Attlee said of Formosa: “I can understand the Americans’ apprehension. I can understand American emotion about it, but in foreign affairs emotionalism is very dangerous.”
“From the Chinese point of view they had a civil war and they won it. “They droye Chiang Kai-shek and the old gang—who were a pretty corrupt gang—right off the mainland into Formosa, where they are comforted and protected by another Power. “The Chinese are now afraid their regime might be attacked by these people, whom they consider they have fairly beaten.”
Mr Attlee said that Communist China should be admitted to the United Nations.
