Women’s Club Members See Prize-Winning Play
The play-writing competition held annually among members of the Canterbury Women’s Club for a cup presented by Mrs G. H. Watts, a former president, was won this year by Mrs F. G. Weideman, for the second time in succession. The prize-winning play last year dealt with an episode in the life of a hospital nurse. This year’s play was based on the dramatic turn of events in the lives of drug traders. Last evening at the club, Mrs Watts Presented the cup and flowers to Mrs Weideman, and congratulated her on her success. She said all members of the club were eligible to enter for the competition, and she hoped the number of entries would increase each year. A bouquet was presented by Mrs Weideman to Mrs Watts, who was
thanked for her interest in the club’s drama circle. The circle, of which Mrs C. E. Wren is director, presented Mrs Weideman’s play with telling effect. Those in the cast were Mesdames G. Bielby, I. Ireland, W. J. Lester, J. Allott, V. Sutherland, G. P. Wiseman, F. Gurnsey, E. McNish, E. Witty, and Weideman. This was followed by two one-act plays. Members of the cast of the first were Mrs L. Barriball, Mrs M. Weir, Mrs Lester and Mrs Wren, and of the second Mrs Wren, Mrs Bielby, and Mrs McNish.
The president of the club (Mrs N. W. Gale) presided, and as the gathering was the last that the circle will hold this year presentations were madeto Mrs Wren and to Mrs McNish, who is the circle’s wardrobe mistress.
