MOTOR-CYCLIST KILLED
COLLISION WITH CAR AT KAIAPOI PILLION RIDER RESCUED FROM DITCH When a motor-cycle and a motorcar collided at the comer of Peraki street and Ohoka road, Kaiapoi, at 7.45- a.m. yesterday, the motor-cyclist was killed and his pillion passenger was just saved from drowning by the quick thinking of a woman passenger in the car.
The man killed was Adrianus Johannes Aarts, aged 31, a labourer, of Victoria street, Rangiora.
The pillion passenger, Albert Victor Andrew Attewell, aged 33, of Kaiapoi, was thrown about 40 feet by the collision and landed in a ditch with his head under the water. Mrs Atyeo, a passenger in the car, driven by Robert Henry Moor, of 36 Hilton street, Kaiapoi, and which was involved in th? collision, rushed to the ditch and helc Attewell’s head above the water unti assistance arrived. Attewell, whc suffered injuries, was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital by St John ambulance.
The car driven by Moor was travelling south along Peraki street and the motor-cycle was travelling east on Ohoka road when the collision occurred. Mr Aarts was thrown over the top of the car and was killed instantly. He was on his way to his work at a freezing works in Belfast at the time of the accident.
Mr Aarts came to New Zealand from Holland at the end of 1950. An inquest into his death was opened yesterday afternoon before the Coroner (Mr E. B. E. Taylor) and adjourned after evidence of identification had been taken.
