Drastic Decree In Iraq
(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, September 23. The Government of Iraq last night abolished the country’s three remaining political parties—the Independence (Umma), the Socialist and the United Popular Front —banned the Independence Party’s newspaper “Liwa Al Istaqlal” for a year, banned students from all party memberships and banned the formation of any racial or communal societies. The General Election in Iraq 10 days ago resulted in a sweeping victory of the supporters of the Prime Minister, General Nuri Al-Said, whose opponents withdrew from the election, alleging that it was not free.
