WRESTLING

Sir,—As an interested member of the wrestling sport, I would like to know who the members of the Canterbury Wrestling Association are and who elects them. Do they show a balance-sheet at the end of the financial year, like the Boxing Association? It appears to me that new blood is required after the shocking performance of the wrestling championships held at the Toe H Linwood Boys’ Club. No ropes, and the wrestlers were thrown against the walls of the building on quite a number of occasions. It is a wonder to me some of these boys were not injured. I contend the police should see that ropes are set up around the mat.—Yours, etc., WRESTLING FAN.

September 16, 1954. [When this letter was referred to the secretary of the Canterbury Wrestling Association (Mr M. F. Foate), he said there were 21 members of the association, some of whose membership dated back over 20 years, and a number of whom were prominent businessmen in the city. A committee was elected by the members each year, and an audited balance-sheet was completed and forwarded to the Registrar of Incorporated Societies, as the association was an incorporated society under the Incorporated Societies Act. Mr Foate added that according to Olympic rules no ropes were allowed to be erected round the mat, and no wrestler was injured at the championships.]
