Denbry became eligible to start in the next New Zealand Trotting Cup as a result of biswm in the National Handicap, the main race and 8^° nd th S.. d ?? b eOB the final d *y of *>«e New Zealand Metrapolitan Trotting Club s Grand National meeting at Addington on Saturday. Denbry, runner-up to Rupee in a similar race the previous Saturday, beat Our Roger and the favourite. Rupee. Raced by Mrs A. and Mr J. Darwell, and trained at Taldhurst by N. L. Berkett, Denbry completed a double for the day when he beat a high-class field of sprinters in the Farewell Handicap. , , Denbry led throughout in the National Handicap, and over the final furlong he had too mueh in reserve for the others, winning convincingly by two lengths. It was a fine staying performance by Denbry, a seven-year-old son of Josedale Grattan and the Dillon Hall man, Mary Hall. . I .B lU 'n Eo s er r ?, ce S. weU ,or Bee4md after having every ehance. He trailed Denbry all the way, and ran on well for his placing without ever appearing likely to trouble the winner. Townley took Rupee down on the inside soon after the start, and in a few strides the other drivers had him hopelessly hemmed in four places back on the rails. Dictation created his seventh New Zealand and Australian record when he finished fourth in the Winter Handicap after conceding starts *of up to 96 yards to a strong field. The Josedale Dictator gelding trotted the mile ■nd five furlongs in 3min 25 l-ssec, 2-ssec faster than Denbry’s winning in the National Handicap. Dictation’s time was 1 l-ssec faster than Vodka’s previous record of 3mm 26 2-ssec. Dictation was a long way back early in the race® but he gradually made up his big handicap. He finished brilliantly, and was only five lengths behind the winner at the post The race was won by Battle Cry, which made a long-overdue return to vanning form. Now that he is back to his best Battle Cry should carry on. He will be a welcome addition to the best classes. Other high-class efforts during the day were recorded by Consul (Wildvood Handicap), Midday (Metropolitan Stakes), and Chandelier (Queen Mary Handicap). There were 753 successful 5s tickets on the Chandelier—Denbry doubles combination, which returned £94 3s for £l. The meeting was held in perfect weather before a large crowd.
