GLENTUNNEL ROAD RACE

" The South Malvern Amateur Cycling Club held its annual 10-kilometre road race on Saturday at Glentunnel. Papanui club members took first and third places and first and second fastest times. Dineen, the winner, was having his third race on Saturday, and rode exceedingly well from the limit mark to win by about six lengths from L. Lambert (Christchurch). B. Aitken >rode solidly for third. N. Cowles, the only Papanui rider off the scratch mark and also the only scratch rider to finish, rode exceptionally well to record fastest time. He and R. Fowler (Avon) had drawn away from the other scratch men when half the distance was covered, and at this stage had picked up 20 minutes of their 31min handicap. Fowler, who was suffering from, an injured knee, withdrew in the last lap. Cowles did not .reduce his handicap any more, finishing 11 minutes behind the winner. R. Bush, who took both junior and senior fastest time in the Ashburton to Christchurch race, returned second fastest time on Saturday. Of the 72 starters, only 23 completed the course, and some of these were outside the time limit.
