E.D.C.
' Sir,—One is inescapably . forced to contemplate possible developments arising out of the efforts of those, postulating defence of the “free world, to bludgeon France into the invidious and humiliating position of having to be the inain victim of possible international military Fascist revivalism. United States spokesmen of note have asserted that in the event of Mendes-France not “signing up the E.D.C. “agreement,” Western Germany, will be allowed to orgamse combative forces unrestricted. This threat might give Frartce an incentive seriously to consider the reintroduction of the Franco-Soviet pact ,of mutual assistance. Poland has, this week, suggested her willingness to co-operate with France. This country has two alternatives: its unwanted inclusion in E.D.C. or the association with those that settled Hitlerism a few years back and have consistently opposed its redevelopment.—Yours, etc., August 29, 1954.
