TERROR STRIKES BRAZIL
Communists Blamed For Disorder
(N.Z. Pres* Association—CopvnoW (Rec. 9 p.m.) ' NEW YORK, August 28. Reports from Porto Alegre, in South Brazil, that the city was in a state of terror over rioting which had cost six lives in the last three days, were quoted in a “New York Times” dispatch from Rio de Janeiro today.
Troops were trying to prevent a fresh outbreak, the paper said. Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande Do Sul, the home state of the late President, Dr. Getulio Vargas, who committed suicide this week. “Throughout the country, the Communists have worked for disorder,” the report said.
“The natural grief of the friends and admirers of the late President has been exploited to obtain the co-operation of groups that have no moral communistic connexion.” The “Washington Post” said in an editorial today that the Brazilian riots had taken on an ominously anti-Ameri-can character.. The necessities of South American politics would seem to dictate the continued collaboration of Brazil and the United States in matters of international policy, the newspaper said. “But if the Comfmunists succeed in winning over former followers of Vargas, the situation will be dangerous indeed,” the “Washington Post” added.
