BOYS WAIST-DEEP IN MUD

RESCUE FROM NELSON HARBOUR (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, August 26. Three young Nelson boys who sank waist-deep in sludge thrown up by the reclamation dredge while exploring the Nelson harbour mudflats yesterday afternoon, struggled for more than 15 minutes to free themselves before they were rescued. Their cries for help were heard by several men who immediately went to their assistance.

The boys were James Wilson, aged six years, and two brothers, Murray and Brian Cameron, aged five and eight years. Mr C. J. Bickley, an employee at the British Petroleum Company’s depot at Port Nelson, crawled on his stomafch for many yards over the slimy sludge tq secure a rope around Murray, the youngest of the boys, who was unable to move. Brian and James managed to wade some distance and were assisted on to dry land by Mr J. Ching, a school teacher, who went knee deep into the mud to meet them.
