RANFURLY SHIELD
Sir,—Ohe is amazed to see the name of P. Eastgate in the selection for New Zealand versus Maoris. Although the New Zealand selectors may have first call, it is plaint' silly to interfere with Ranfurly Shield team* for such an unimportant match. Does it not dawn on the New Zealand Rugby Union that the Canterbury Rugby Union is under a moral obligation to stand by all its supporters, to whom season tickets were sold with the implied assumption that the best team would be put in the field. The Waikato team also is affected; and one can imagine the feelings of Waikato supporters, particularly those who are incurring the expense of coming to Christchurch for the match. They would at least expect that their best team was available and that their team would be meeting the best team. —Yours, etc., TICKET-HOLDER. August 22, 1954.
