“DEAL” WITH PETROV

Charge By Dr. Evatt (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 12.30 a.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 12. Dr. H. V. Evatt accused the Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) of having made a “deal” for political gain with Vladimir Petrov, ,the former Soviet Embassy official in Canberra. In a statement outside Parliament Dr. ,Evatt said Mr Menzies, when announcing on April 13 that Petrov had sought and been granted political asylum in Australia, painted a picture of a man merely seeking individual freedom in » democratic State. The “sinister fact,” Dr. Evatt said, was that Petrov had received £5OOO for certain documents which the Government bought for the purpose of unduly and improperly influencing the Australian people at the (then) forthcoming elections. Dr. Evatt asked: (1) Why Mr Menzies did not inform the Australian people on April 13 that Petrov was paid £5OOO in addition to being granted political asylum? (2) Why this “vital fact” was withheld from April 4, when the money was paid to Petrov, until after the elections on May 29?
