BACON FACTORY SOLD

PURCHASE BY MEAT COMPANY TRANSFER OF OPERATIONS FROM BELFAST A bacon factory in Lichfield street. Christchurch, has been bought by the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd., so that it can increase its facilities for handling beef at its Belfast works. The factory, which is near the City Council’s vehicle testing station, has been operated for many years by Messrs_Kincaids. Ltd. It is a semi-two-storey building, the ground floor being of about 6000 square feet and the upper floor of 1100 square feet. The general manager of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company (Mr R. D. Iles) said yesterday that the factory had been offered to his company a few weeks ago, and it had been bought so that the company’s bacon curing department could be moved from the Belfast works. At Belfast, the bacon curing department occupied a large area in the middle of a block of buildings used for freezing anti storing lamb and beef. With fresh premises available, work would be started at Belfast as soon as possible to increase the facilities for handling beef for export in the space now occupied by the bacon department. said Mr Iles. The space was most suitable for the purpose intended for it.

Possession of the Lichfield street factory would be taken soon, Mr Iles said, and after some remodelling had been done, the Belfast bacon factbry would be moved to Lichfield street. That would then allow the alterations at Belfast to proceed. The company would continue to kill pigs at the Belfast works, Mr Hes said. The carcases for bacon curing would be brought by road transport to the factory in Lichfield street. Mr A. E. Kincaid said last evening that the factory staff would be taken over by the purchasing company, and his firm would be supplied with smpllgoods from the factory as before.
