ADDINGTON MARKET

MOST SECTIONS SMALLER Good Sale For Fat , Hoggets EVEN ENTRY OF STORE SHEEP Yar dings in most sections at Addington yesterday were smaller than they have been recently, but in general there was little rise in prices. The exception was lighter ewes and wethers, which were distinctly dearer. In both the fat cattie and fat sheep sections buyers jvere not keen to acquire the heavily finished stock which at this time of year forms so considerable a part of the yardings. The store sheep entry was interesting because the selection of breeding ewes was about the most even of the winter. All the ewes were in moderate to good condition, but buyers appeared to be interested mainly in the best, which sold at about recent rates. Others were cheaper. The selection of hoggets was limited, and prices lower. The first lot of ewes and lambs for the season appeared, and as they were of outstanding quality sold very well.

STORE SHEEP The store sheep yarding consisted of 460 ewe hoggets. 386 wether hoggets, 1363 ewes, and 138 wethers, a total of 2366 against 2438 last week. It was unfortunate that about the best selection of ewes for the winter met a somewhat slack sale, with values lower than they were last week, except for the best sheep. Buyers appear to be hanging off the market until the warmer weather comes, and though there was a big crowd at the sale, not many of them were buyers. The ewe hogget offering was largely made up\of pens of good-style Romneys from Otago, of which most were passed. The one lot sold, 68, made £5 3s, which was top of the sale. Prices were about 2s below last week. Apart from the top line, only a few other pens were sold, and made between 41s and 635. The small selection of wether hoggets was also mixed in quality, and prices were from Is to 2s below last week’s. Top price was 81s-, for lots of four and two. A line of 150 from the estate of F. R. Flatman (Carew) —well-woolled first-class Romney halfbreds—made 68s. The good condition of the great bulk of the offering of aged ewes reflected the relatively easy winter that most districts have enjoyed, and many of the lots offered looked better than they were. For good-style ewes with reasonable mouths rnd feet, of which there was a fair showing, prices were not much different from those of last week. One or two good lots looked very cheap, and all lots in low condition were cheaper by 2s a head than last week. The first substantial lot of ewes with lambs appeared. They were a splendid lot from C. Ashworth and Son (Sefton), big, roomy Corriedales, with a splendid fleece and tound mouths, running with Do- n cross lambs. The line of 51 ewes and 57 lambs made 55s 6d, all counted. Top price of the sale was 89s, paid for a pen of 34 two-tooth halfbreds from J. D. Galpin (Southbridge). The same vendor topped the section for older ewes with a sale of 73 four, six, and eighttooth Corriedales at 84s. The best of the yarding made 79s to 84»; medium to good, 71s to 78s; and others down to 41s. Representative sales of ewes were on account of A. Gebbie (Teddington), 26 s.m. Romney at 765; J. S. Bowker (Amberley), 48 two-tooth halfbred at 78s; J. P. Smith (Springbank), 61 Romney cross at 735, 61 at 775. The handful of wethers made up to 675. SPRING LAMBS Only one spring lamb came before buyers this week, compared with six at the last sale, when spring lambs made their first appearance at Addington for the- season. Yesterday’s lamb, from D. H. Butcher (Broadfields), made 94s Id. It would weigh Ibout 301 b. FAT HOGGETS There was a phenomenal sale for fat hoggets. The main reason was the short entry- It totalled 275. compared with 502. Quality was L, the main very good. For everything offering the demand was very «een and values In many cases improved “•Y .HP to 8s a head on late sales, which have been regarded as being very satisfactory. The promise of a short yarding of mutton also helped to stimulate the market, and make it one of the best for sellers lor a long time. Top price of the day was £5 7s Id tor two from Miss Fay Smith (Ashlev Bank) and six shorn hoggets from A.* J. McLaughlin and Son (Mount Hutt) made only Is less. 'Hie best made up to £5 7s Id, good 85s to 995, medium 72s to 84s, and others down to 58s.

It was once again mainly a high quality offering with a wide selection of extra prime sorts. With such a large selection of heavy sheep there was a particularly good demand for better cutting wethers and ewes. For most of the offering the sale was not quite as firm as last week until toward the end when prices turned upward, but for the lighter finished sorts prices were up by 2s in the case of wethers and up to 3s for ewes. Top price for wethers was £6 Is Id for the tops of a lot of 10 from C. O. Redfern (Darfield). R. J. Clarkson and Son (Greendale) sold 45 at an average of £5 17s, with the top eight making £6 0s Id. FAT CATTLE The entry of fat cattle was 324 against 514 last week. Quality was again excellent for the most part, but butchers found a proportion of the offering rather fat, and discriminated against too much finish. Cows sold well throughout the sale and were fully £1 a head dearer than they were last week.
