PATEA BY-ELECTION

Sir,—Mr Sheat’s hollow victory in the Patea by-election must cause alarm in Tory circles. Had it not been for the independent candidate, Labour would have won, a seat which, last election, was held by the Tories with a majority of 2467. Through vote-split-ting, Labour has been robbed of a victory. I am afraid that the same sort of thing will happen at the next General Election, when those comedians of high finance, the social credit group, will split the votes and permit the Tories to carry on their “boom and bust” methods of government.—Yours, etc., CITIZEN. August 11, 1954.
