ELECTRICITY FROM ATOMIC POWER

PREDICTION BY N.Z. SCIENTIST (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 11. New Zealand might obtain its electricity from atomic power within 15 years, said Dr. Ernest Marsden to the Wellington Rotary Club yesterday. A former secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr. Marsden has been engaged in atomic research in London as New Zealand’s scientific liaison officer. “In 15 years’ time the cost of coal will have leaped up and even the North Island’s new hydro network will probably be working at capacity,” said Dr. Marsden. “It is about this time that I expect the first economic atomic generating plants to come into operatign. “On present costs, atomic power in New Zealand would be 50 per cent, a kilowatt hour dearer than hydroelectric power, but by-products will help to keep costs down.”
