ASSETS SEIZED FROM NAZIS

Eisenhower Opposes Return (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, Aug. 10. President Eisenhower had informed the West German Government not to expect the return of assets to the value of about 500,000,000 dollars seized during World War 11, a “New York Times” correspondent reported from Washington today. The report said that in a letter to the West German Chancellor, Dr. Konrad Adenauer, Mr Eisenhower was understood to have said diplomatically, but firmly, that none of the pending legislation in Congress designed to restore the seized property to its original German owners had his support. A bill to effect the property restoration had been favourably reported on by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The report said that the effect of Mr Eisenhower’s attitude was to kill the chances of Congressional approval of the restoration proposal. Diplomatic officials declined to speculate on the effect of Mr Eisenhower’s position on Germany’s attitude toward European unity problems.
