Indonesia Severs Dutch Union
THE HAGUE, August 10. The five-year-old union tie linking Indonesia and the Netherlands under the Dutch Crown was formally abolished at The Hague today. The Netherlands-Indonesian Union was the sole political bond between the two countries remaining after the transfer of sovereignty to the former Dutch East Indies in 1949. The Indonesian Foreign Minister <Mr Sunarjo) said the Indonesian fear that the abolition of the union would he accompanied by conditions conflicting with the right of self-determina-tion “ha happily proved to be unfounded.” He said Indonesia wished to give “reasonable recognition” to Netherlands interests in Indonesia. Normal international agreements Would be concluded for commercial •nd other relations considered useful by both countries.
