Indonesia Severs Dutch Union

THE HAGUE, August 10. The five-year-old union tie linking Indonesia and the Netherlands under the Dutch Crown was formally abolished at The Hague today. The Netherlands-Indonesian Union was the sole political bond between the two countries remaining after the transfer of sovereignty to the former Dutch East Indies in 1949. The Indonesian Foreign Minister <Mr Sunarjo) said the Indonesian fear that the abolition of the union would he accompanied by conditions conflicting with the right of self-determina-tion “ha happily proved to be unfounded.” He said Indonesia wished to give “reasonable recognition” to Netherlands interests in Indonesia.
