PRICE OF VEGETABLES

Sir, —May I support your previous correspondents in their complaint about the price of vegetables. First, the public should be told that wholesale prices, less costs, received by the grower have no relation to retail prices. The economic and financial position of the jjtfustiy has become so acute over the last few years that I have been forced to subdivide my highly-productive land into building sites. Tomatoes, which have been my main productive line, were sold last season at prices well below production costs. This is hardly in line with the rest of the community, who are enjoying a progressively higher standard of living, while those in the market gardening industry are rapidly becoming the peasant class of New Zealand. I see no hope for the industry under the present marketing system. Therefore, I advise anyone contemplating market gardening as a business to turn to some more lucrative occupation.— \ours, etc., _ ORA PRO NOBIS. August 10, 1954.
