MISS HOWARD REVIEWS NEGOTIATIONS

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 10. Before very long there would be some forward move made over the Colombo street bridge, said Miss M. B. Howard (Opposition, Sydenham) m the House of Representatives this evening, when she spoke for a quarter of an hour in the Budget debate before the House adjourned. She said that on one or two occasions Mr H. R. Lake (Government, Lyttelton) had spoken about the need for the bridge. That was well recognised. Mr Lake had also said that the City Council was remiss in its duty m not doing something about the bridge. “This bridge, after all,” said Miss Howard, “has been discussed since 1935. Then the Labour Government went into the question together with a new station and all its ramifications. Then the war came, and it was all scrapped.” . Construction of the station was going ahead, and it had reached the point where the overhead bridge was a possibility, so the council decided to try to expedite the building of .the bridge. The General Manager of Railways was asked to agree to a conference and to give plans and alternative proposals. Recently officers of the Railways Department had met council officers and discussed plans. The departmental officers had agreed to prepare preliminary plans for the bridge, and after that council officers were to • pepare preliminary plans of approaches. •
