TASMAN CUP
'AUSTRALIA BEATS NEW ZEALAND (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) BRISBANE, Aug. 1. Australia retained the Tasman Cup women's golf trophy by beating New Zealand by 6 matches to 1 on the Yeerongpilly course, yesterday. Australia, which won one of the two foursomes and all the five singles matches to retain the cup, has previously won four times and tied once since the end of the war. The only upset occurred before lunch when New Zealand’s top pair, Mrs R. Purdon and Miss D. Blundell, beat the Australian champion, Miss Judith Percy and Miss Elizabeth Gibbings on the eighteenth green in the opening foursomes. Mrs C. McDiarmid and Miss A. Nash were easily beaten, 4 and 3, by the Victorian' junior champion. Miss Margaret Masters, and the current New Zealand champion. Miss Maxine Bishop, in the other foursomes. In the singles. Mrs Purdon lost to Miss Bishop at the eighteenth. Miss Blundell : was beaten by Miss Percy, 6 and 5; Miss , Nash was beaten by Miss D.
