HOME-BUILDING SCHEME
CLASSES STARTED IN FIVE CENTRES PLANS FOR COURSES IN 17 MORE AREAS (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON. July 29. Technical schools in five centres are now providing instruction under the “build your own home” scheme, and instruction in a further 17 towns has been authorised. This information is given in the report of the Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan), which was presented to the House of Representatives today. “The scheme does not aim to produce tradesmen,” says the report. “It has been devised to give to those who intend to build their own homes the opportunity of learning the skills involved in carrying out the finishing work on the average size and type of family home, and through this practical knowledge a clearer appreciation of what is involved in this phase of home construction.”
Four classes, according to the report, are now operating in the Hutt Valley through the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, and two classes will begin at Dunedin through the King Edward Technical College in the first
week of April. Auckland, Palmerston North, and Nelson classes will be fully organised at the beginning of the second school term. Instruction in a further 17 towns wa? based on the public demand, and classes will begin in those localities as soon as the houses are ready. “It is expected that many of these classes will come into being during the second school term,” the report says.
