REMOVAL OF SALES TAX

QUESTIONS ASKED IN HOUSE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 28. Two questions based on the recent decision to exempt certain items from sales tax were asked in the House of Representatives this afternoon. In a question directed to the Minister of Finance (Mr Holland). Miss M. B. Howard (Opposition, Sydenham) asked when a reduction in prices could be expected from items from which sales tax had been removed. What check, she asked, was there on the date when such goods entered the shops? Mr P. G. Connolly (Opposition, Dunedin Central) asked the Minister of Customs (Mr C. M. Bowden) to consider amending the Sales Tax Act to provide a rebate to retailers where sales tax had already been paid on goods which were later exemoted. In a note to his question, IVbr Connolly said a comparable procedure had been followed when the grocery trade was granted refunds after sugar and tea prices were reduced.
