Dr. and Mrs L. C. L. Averill (Bealey avenue), Mrs W. W. Averill (St. Mary’s Vicarage, Merivale), and Mrs G. Cartridge will leave this week for Napier to attend the wedding of their sister-in-law, Mrs M. Averill, to Mr Justice Hutchison, which will take place on Saturday. Mrs M. Averill is the widow of Archbishop Averill’s son, Mr Selwyn Averill, who died some years ago. Mrs A. G. Leeden has taken up her position as full-time senior teacher of lip-reading at the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing. She has recently completed a course of training at the Auckland branch of the league, which is regarded as the training centre for New Zealand. Mrs Leeden was formerly a primary school teacher and completed her training at the Dunedin Teachers’ College. Members of the social committee of the branch held a morning tea party yesterday for members of the executive and the students to meet Mrs Leeden. Among the guests were the president (Sir Joseph Ward) and Mr H. Pickering, principal of the School for the Deaf, Sumner.

The July meeting of the North Canterbury executive committee of the County Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs B. Pearce, Ohoka road, Kaiapoi. Mrs Bunden (Waikgri) presided. Mrs Cross reported that the handcraft classes for the Hurunui east district were completed and that a group display was to be held at Cheviot in October. There were 11 entries for the Margaret Stewart pennant. Mrs Clemett reported a credit balance of £3 3s 6d from the district drama festival. A floral school conducted at Rangiora had been a success. Dressmaking classes had also been commenced at Rangiora and Pines Beach. It was decided to hold the half-yearly meeting for the federation at Hawarden.

Impressions of the various countries in the British Empire and the customs of the people were given by the president of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Empire Society (Mr Wilfrid Peers) at the monthly meeting of the branch at Elizabeth House last evening. Mr Peers recently returned from a round-the-world tour air journey, which included Australia, Britain. Europe, Canada, and the United States. Mr A. F. Excell presided, and Mr D. Ames thanked the speaker. The third round of the club pairs championship played at the Christchurch Contract Bridge Club resulted as follows:—Open: north-south, Miss P. Norton and Mr D. T. The monthly meeting of the Canterbury and west Coast branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society was held in the splint department of the Christchurch Public Hospital. A tour of the department was made under the leadership of Mr Challis. Requests for assistance that came before the meeting included footwear and a typewriter. The purchase of a new vehicle as a replacement was discussed. Mr L. G. K. Steven presided. The hot meal service of the Methodist Central Mission, which was inaugurated last year, will commence again on Monday at the mission’s new headquarters at the Durham Street South Methodist Church. This service is for persons without adequate cooking facilities. It would be appreciated if those wishing to participate in this wduld notify the office, 53 Cathedral square, before Monday. A demonstration on making hats was given by Mrs Meyer at the second meeting of the New Brighton Catholic Women’s Social Club. A sketch was presented by Mesdames Paget and Hutchings.
