DRAMA THEATRE FOR WELLINGTON
CITY COUNCIL ACQUIRES BUILDING (New Zealand Press Association) , WELLINGTON, July 20. The strong and widely-supported amateur drama movement in Wellington will soon have a home of its own —a fully equipped civic theatre seating 850 persons, in the heart of the city. The Wellington City Council has bought the Paramount Theatre, in Courtenay place, and a firm of architects has been authorised to prepare plans for complete remodelling to meet amateur dramatic needs. It is expected that the council, at its next meeting, will agree to call tenders for the work.
At a recent meeting of City Council representatives and delegates from amateur dramatic societies concerned in the project, it was agreed that an incorporated board of control should be set up, and that the council should grant it a lease of the theatre. The board will consist of a councillor as chairman, three members representing the Wellington Repertory Society, and two elected by other dramatic societies.
